The man who was killed in an explosion at a chemical plant on Wednesday, September 27, 2017 was identified by the county coroner later that day.

According to Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen, the body recovered from the DSM Resins plant in Augusta, GA was Steven Gonsalves, a 29-year-old man from Beech Island.

“We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred today at the DSM site in Augusta,” Hugh Welsh, the president of DSM North America said. “Our thoughts are with the family of the man who suffered a fatal injury as well as the two men who were injured in the accident.”

There were also two other workers taken to a nearby hospital to receive decontamination for chemical exposure according to Augusta Fire Chief Chris James.

James reported that a welding accident was the cause of the explosion, but that no evacuation was necessary.

The plant produces powder-coat paint resins and is part of a large industrial complex that includes the recently closed Fibrant caprolactam plant previously owned by DSM, as well as a nitrogen plant.

According to Welsh, the three workers were contractors working on the site and not DSM employees.
